In November 2024, H.E the President launched the construction of 232 KM the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Malaba on the Kenyan border to Kampala, Uganda.
58% of the right-of-way for the SGR on the Eastern Route (Malaba-Kampala) has been acquired, civil works contract has been signed. Project Affected Persons (PAPs) for the 1.575 acres acquired (135km out of the 232km mainline) have been paid. . |

Description |
The SGR project mainly focuses on developing a modern, integrated, and efficient railway transport system to address both freight and passenger transportation needs of Uganda across the region and connecting to global routes.
The SGR will add 1,724km of railway in Uganda. It will improve cargo transportation efficiency from the port of Mombasa. |
